Prof. Dr. Stuart Parkin
Managing Director at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Halle and Alexander von Humboldt Professor at the Institute of Physics of the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg
When working for IBM Prof. Dr. Stuart Parkin has succeeded in dramatically increasing the storage density of magnetic storage media by harnessing the GMR effect (giant magnetoresistance) in hard disk reading heads. In addition, Prof. Parkin made a major contribution to the development of the MRAM technology (magnetoresistive random-access memory). He deals with future technologies in the field of spintronics like the MTT (magnetic tunneling transistor), the “Racetrack Memory” concept and ionotronic devices. His groundbreaking research is an impressive example of highly successful technology transfer. He mediates between basic research in the fields of physics, chemistry and materials science, and commercialization of new products such as magnetic sensors and storage technologies.
Prof. Dr. Stuart Parkin is an “IBM Fellow” and since 2007 director at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Halle.
Prof. Dr. Michael Heuken
Vice President Corporate Research & Development AIXTRON SE
Prof. Dr. Michael Heuken and his team managed in their pioneering work to deposit compound semiconductors such as gallium nitride (GaN) uniformly on large area substrates and thus helped to leverage the success for the entire LED technology. The new process lead to a significant cost reduction in manufacturing resource-saving LED lighting. His research is also a prime example of how to transfer an invention to a sustainable innovation at the interface between business and science. Prof. Dr. Heuken is an adjunct professor at RWTH Aachen University in the field of semiconductor technology and is responsible for new materials and production processes at AIXTRON SE. As a board member in the NanoMicroMaterialsPhotonics association (NMWP E.V.) he advocates the academic and industrial landscape of North Rhine-Westphalia as well as the transfer of knowledge at various levels.
Prof. Dr. Samuel I. Stupp
Simpson Querrey Institute for BioNanotechnology, Northwestern University, Chicago
The research of the Stupp group has a strong multidisciplinary character and combines chemistry, materials science and medicine. The main focus is on the development of self-assembling organic materials with functional components for energy and medical applications, in particular nanostructures for regenerative medicine and cancer treatment, for photovoltaic and solar-based generation of energy but also ferroelectrics for information technology.
Prof. Stupp is one of the pioneers in the field of peptide nanomaterials and he has explored and established the pioneering class of peptide amphiphiles. These with a high aspect ratio self-assembling nanofibers open up extensive applications in regenerative medicine.
Samuel I. Stupp is professor of materials science, chemistry and medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
Mostafa Analoui, Ph.D.
Head of Healthcare and Life Sciences at The Livingston Group (New York, NY) and Chairman and Executive Director of UConn Ventures
As a head of healthcare and life sciences at the Livingston Group, M. Analoui is engaged in drug research, development and diagnostic imaging. He analyzes and assesses investment decisions in the field of nanobiotechnology with respect to new business development and the development of global strategies. He previously held the position of a senior director at Pfizer Global Research and Development and used to be the site manager for Global Clinical Technology, a division that focuses primarily on the development and validation of biomarkers for diagnostics in drug development. In addition to his leading positions in areas of biomedical technology he teaches in the United States, Europe and Asia. He advises companies, research institutions and organizations such as NIH, NSF, PhRMA, NASA and the OECD.
